It’s no secret that mental health concerns are rising. In the most recent National Youth Survey, just below one in four young people aged 15-19 years met the criteria for having a serious mental illness. This number increased from 18.7% in 2012 to 22.8% in 2016. The Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing reads that more than 25% of Australians aged 16-24 have reported one or more mental illnesses i.e. anxiety, substance use or depressive disorders. This survey also announced that only 23% of young people with a mental health illness actually receive professional help.
It is this statistical cry for help and also what I have witnessed while working with young people for more than 25 years, which calls me to help provide more wellness support options for our youth.
The constant stream of visual stimulation that young people are absorbing today is difficult to monitor, is often invasive and can be emotionally disturbing. Social media platforms are deliberately designed to hold users’ attention as long as possible and this can easily lead a vulnerable youth along a path of cyber addiction, comparison, validation, fear and rejection. It seems that simplicity, calm, and space to pause are fast becoming extinct in the lives of so many and this is contributing to the rise of mental health concerns.
The good news is that science has proven that self awareness and self regulation practices bring balance to the nervous system and this ability to relax and reset are among the list of recommended mental health support strategies. While many may be fortunate to receive such support and self-care guidance, there are still too many young people missing out on learning these much needed life skills.
Having written wellbeing programs for educators and students for over a decade, I’ve had the opportunity to trial and test a broad range of mindful awareness, self-regulation and emotional resilience techniques in many settings.
In 2017 I included a short anonymous four question survey at a series of wellbeing sessions I was teaching. The results were astounding.
Students reported changes from being stressed, overwhelmed and confused before the session, to calm, capable and relaxed afterwards. Outcomes like this confirmed that I needed to develop and deliver another program to support youth and again measure the outcomes.
R.E.S.E.T is this empowerment program and is built around the mindfulness practice of yoga, meditation and relaxation. Each week shares a specific focus area of how to manage stress, release tension and calm the mind. This program is free and open to youth aged 11 – 17 years.
